Davids: Hortman should resign over “white male card game” comment

In a debate over anti-protest legislation, House minority leader Melissa Hortman called for all members to come to the floor in a way that led to demands for apologies and a resignation.

Hortman said: “I hate to break up the 100-percent white male card game in the retiring room, but I think this is an important debate.”

The Uptake has a video of the comment:

Representatives Joyce Peppin and Bob Dettmer asked for an apology from Hortman, but she would not.

“I have no intention of apologizing.” Hortman said that she was “really tired of watching women of color in particular being ignored. So I’m not sorry.”

Rep. Greg Davids told Heather Carlson of the Rochester Post-Bulletin that he thinks Hortman should resign over the comment, saying that she created a “hostile work environment”.

The anti-protest provision in the public safety finance bill was not removed.
