Bill Cooper, former TCF CEO and MnGOP chair, dies

Bill Cooper, the former CEO of TCF Bank and former chairman of the Republican Party of Minnesota, has died at the age of 73.

The Saint Paul Pioneer Press:

“The entire TCF family is saddened by the passing of Bill Cooper, and we will miss his passion for our company, its people and his strong leadership of our board of directors,” Craig Dahl, TCF’s vice chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “From the time he became our CEO in 1985 when TCF was a struggling savings and loan to leading us to be the strong, independent and growing company it is today, Bill transformed our company more than once and mentored many great leaders.”

Cooper also was a major force in Minnesota politics. As chairman of the state Republicans from 1997 to 1999, he unified a fractured party and helped it win control of the Minnesota House for the first time in years. He donated more than $200,000 to state GOP campaigns since 2005 and at least that much to federal campaigns.
