Homicide in downtown Minneapolis is city’s first of 2017

Over a 24-hour period this weekend, five people were shot in downtown Minneapolis, one of whom died. It was the first homicide in Minneapolis this year.

Paul Walsh of the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Police have yet to release any of the victims’ identities but an Indiana woman on Sunday said the man who died was her brother, William Irvin, 35, of St. Paul.

Minneapolis police officers arrived at the scene of both shootings within seconds, the release said.

The city will add more uniformed and plainclothes officers to the warehouse district to address a group of “violent people, often chronic offenders, who have access to weapons and use them without regard to police presence,” Police Chief Janeé Harteau said in a statement issued Sunday.
